Faith On The Fly: The Airport Chaplains – BBC World Service – Mix

Jude Shapiro asked me to mix her latest BBC World Service documentary, all about the Heathrow Airport chaplains. She spent a week in the airport, following the chaplains and seeing the wide range of work that they do, as well as the range of faiths that they represent.
You can listen to the documentary here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/w3ct7hj2
One thing I liked stylistically about this doc was that Jude didn’t use any music, apart from music that she actually recorded at the airport (amazingly a musical was performed there during the week she was there…). All the sound design came purely from the sounds Jude was able to record at Heathrow. I enjoyed this traditional, paired back approach to sound designing a radio doc.
Jude also used the mid-side recording technique to enhance the sense of ‘space’ or ‘location’ of the sounds you hear in the doc – probably something you’ll need to listen with headphones to appreciate.
