Section 28: Right to be Gay – BBC Radio 4 – Sound design and mix

Dasha Lisitsina from Samizdat Audio produced this great episode of Archive on 4 for BBC Radio 4, about the history of Section 28. Through interviews and archive, it tells the story of how a homophobic moral panic led to the creation of Section 28, a law banning the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality by local authorities and schools.
Section 28 was still in force until my final year at school, so this is the era I grew up in. It was fascinating to hear interviews with people who know the whole story of how it came about. I also really enjoyed getting to sound design this for Dasha! It’s always special when someone trusts you to bring a story they’ve worked so hard on to life in sound.

It also got some very nice write ups in the radio review world! The Times called it an ‘essential listen’ and Miranda Sawyer from the Guardian called it a ‘fantastic listen’.
