Unfit For Service – Vespucci / Wavland – Sound design
This year I got to work with the wonderful producer Rachel Byrne (and the equally wonderful Thomas Curry) as the sound designer for this new eight part podcast series about the US military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. It tells the story of Randy Taylor, a gay General in the US military, and how he navigated life under this policy until it was repealed in 2011.
It’s presented by Eric Marcus from Making Gay History, and was produced by Vespucci for Wavland.
This is a very sensitively and carefully produced series documenting the real life impact of what was a very harmful military policy. So I was really glad I got the chance to help bring this story to life through sound. The series needed a lot of sound design as it was mostly told through Randy and others describing historical events – so plenty of scene building to be done! And a great project to really get stuck into. I hope the sound design does justice to the importance of the story.
Big shout out to Alex Portfelix too, who did the final round of sound design tweaks and the mixing, after I finished on the project.
